The Tax Foundation is out with it’s annual State Business Tax Climate Index. This Index measures how well the states structure their tax systems. It is not just a function of high tax rate states (though that is a factor) but also the ease of compliance, number and types of taxes imposed and the like. Not surprisingly, the state the majority of our clients live, Maryland, does not fare well ranking a rather dismal 42nd of the 50 states. The bottom four states ranked, Connecticut, California, New York and New Jersey are also not surprising. One can debate the specific ranking of a particular state but based on my anecdotal experience I agree generally with the rankings.
